When I started to plan my autumn excursions around Italy, I knew I wanted to re-visit the Italian Riviera but I also had been unimpressed with the accommodations in the smaller cities of the Riviera. I knew I needed to base myself in a central location if I wanted the luxury accommodations I look for when abroad and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect place to base myself for Italian Riviera explorations than The NH Collection in Genova.
The exterior of the NH Collection, Genova Marina -amidst boats, yachts and sailboats alike.
Located right on the marina in Genova, simply the locale of the NH Collection is perfect. With tons to do in the area from the Aquarium (which is a stone’s throw from the property itself) to a weekend market situated along the marina to the ‘Hop On-Hop Off’ bus starting point right next to the property, if you plan to remain in Genova – this is the place to be.
Could you ask for a more picture-perfect location in Genova?
What’s even better is that the main attractions in Genova are all walkable from the marina and The NH Collection – from strolling down Via San Lorenzo to exploring the reconstructed childhood home of Christopher Columbus – you’ll have plenty to do in the area!
Spices and herbs sold at a market stand a few hundred yards from the NH Collection property.
I opted to arrive to Genova by car (side-note: driving in Genova, and on the Italian Riviera in general is not for the faint of heart). However, if you opt to arrive by public transit, the main Train Station (Genova Piazza Pincipe) is just a short 10-20 minute walk (depending on your pace and how many times you opt to stop for a photo or a gelato.)

The location, so close to the train station, also makes the NH Collection the perfect location to explore the cities of the Italian Riviera. Portofino (via Santa-Margherita Ligure) is about a 45 minute train ride and the popular Cinque Terre (via Sestri Levanti) is about an hour and 15 minutes to two hours, depending on the train you catch.
With a location so close to so many picture perfect Italian coastal towns – you’d be silly not to utilize Genova as a base for exploring cities such as Portofino.
Being that it is located right along the marina, the theme of nautical influences can be found throughout the property. I especially loved the dark stained wood that was in the lobby, common areas and restaurant. What was awesome was that there was underground, on-site, parking (despite the marina location!), that led to an elevator to take you up to the lobby.
There’s also an on-site restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast was a delicious array of buffet options, including make-your-own parfait bowls, generous selections of different meats and cheeses, breads, pastries, fresh juices and self-serve espresso, cappuccino and coffee options.
Some of the breakfast buffet options to the right in the on-site restaurant.
I had the pleasure of dining at Il Gozo for dinner and was so happy I opted to have dinner in that night. With fresh seafood and traditional Italian and Ligurian dishes, some with a modern twist, anyone would be satisfied after a meal at Il Gozo. The menu isn’t very expansive, but if you’re familiar with quality Italian restaurants – you’ll know that the fewer options, the better.
Il Gozo’s nautical theme is perfect for the location, overlooking the marina.
On long summer nights the place to be is the outdoor terrace at Il Gozo.
I started my meal at Il Gozo with perfectly fried mozzarella served over fresh, seasonal veggies.
For my main course I opted for the seafood linguine, served with mussels and clams in a light sauce topped with shrimp tartare. *swoon*
There are seven types of rooms at the NH Collection in Genova, I had the luxury of enjoying a suite, which was not only huge but also a duplex! The storage options were insane and we even had a second, half bathroom as well as a second bedroom with a twin bed – perfect for families. The room also came equipped with an espresso/coffee machine, reasonably priced mini bar and extremely fast wifi. A strong wifi connection is imperative for someone like me, who works while they travel, and I was pleasantly surprised at the speed and agility of the NH Collection wifi.
A sweet-treat and a warm welcome to the NH Collection, Genova Marina – paired with a coffee and an espresso from our in-room machine.
The master bedroom of the suite was huge! With a large bed, a huge desk, and a mini-bar.
As if the suite wasn’t large enough, the master bedroom also had a small sitting area under the windows which overlooked the marina.
The smaller, single bedroom in the suite which was still very large – especially by European standards.
The living room of the suite was located on the first floor, while the master bath, and both bedrooms were located on the second floor.
Typically, European bathroom amenities are pretty-skimp compared to what we’re used to in America but the amenities at the NH Collection in Genova blew me away! The hand cream was a special (and appreciated) touch.
From the marina location to the views and hues of sunset at night with the delicious food and top of the line service in between, the NH Collection in Genova is the perfect luxury hotel to base yourself at during a visit to the Italian Riviera – or simply when visiting Genova!
