Oh, Italy. I’ve always been vocal about Italy being my favorite country and, fun fact, my #GLWJitaly hashtag on Instagram has more photos than any other of my destination tags. I haven’t been as vocal about fall being my favorite season but there’s something special about the change that autumn sparks; not just in the physical changes of the weather, the leaves and the time the sun goes down but also the inspiring, “fresh start” feels that can come with autumn.
Being that this is the first year in the last four that I’m not spending my autumn, or at least part of it, in Italy; I’m having some serious FOMO. And what better way to reminisce about past travels than going through photos of them?! I came to realize I have such a great collection of my Italy in autumn photos that I felt this roundup was necessary this year!
Here are 20 photos to inspire you to book a trip to Italy during autumn… on the off-chance that the absence of tourists and lack of peak season crowds combined with the perfect weather to sightsee in; while also getting great off-season or shoulder-season deals on hotels isn’t enough to convince you.
There’s nothing quite like a perfect autumn #PinkHour. Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy.
Olives in Tuscany are often harvested earlier (in September) than the rest of the Mediterranean (which typically harvests olives in December/January) due to the likelihood of an early Tuscan frost!
Fall colors and falling leaves adorn a square in Bergamo, Italy.
The leaves don’t start changing in Montepulciano until late October – meaning you can experience a bit of the summer feels, without the summer crowds.
Another perfect #PinkHour – this time in Verona, Italy.

Fall foliage and changing leaves adorn a garden entryway on a path between the Bellagio City Center and Pescallo, a hamlet of Bellagio, on Lake Como, Italy.
Fun fact: Many visitors to Bellagio have the common misconception that the city center of Bellagio make up the whole town – however, Bellagio is a city made up of twenty two smaller hamlets.
Thanks to Mich of Bellagio Water Sports, I got to discover Bellagio more intimately than on past trips! Read all about discovering Bellagio, via the lake, with Bellagio Water Sports here.
The autumn fall colors in Pescallo on Lake Como were some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen!
Another perfect #PinkHour in Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy. There’s just something about fall that produces the most perfect sunsets!
I spent two weeks exploring Cinque Terre in October of 2017! For more Cinque Terre images check out 34 Images to Inspire Cinque Terre Wanderlust .
It’s so fun to see how different cultures celebrate different holidays – I loved the unique pumpkin carvings that I stumbled upon in Positano, on the Amalfi Coast, a few days before Halloween!
I loved the fall harvest at the produce stands along the drive on the Amalfi Coast with Luigi on my personal tour with Amalfi Coast Tour!
I can’t suggest touring the Amalfi Coast with Amalfi Coast Tour enough! A personalized tour with a knowledgeable tour guide and driver is the best way to explore the coast, in my humble opinion. You can read more about my day Exploring Amalfi and Ravello with Amalfi Coast Tour here!
Okay, I’m tossing these #PinkHour’s at you like its my job – but seriously, is there anything more perfect than a pink sunset to end an autumn day?! Here’s the sky on absolute fire over the eternal city, Rome.
Could this pumpkin be any more picturesque?! Another fall harvest photo from the Amalfi Coast!
The Amalfi Coast is one of my favorite places on earth and my Five Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary will give you an insight into the best of the best that the Amalfi Coast has to offer!
A gloomy day is an autumn staple and also helps these bright fall hues pop in Pescallo Bay on Lake Como.
An autumn vegetable pasta primavera in Cortona, Italy where the weather is *perfect* for outdoor dining in October.
One of my favorite hotel stays to date was at Hotel Borgo Giusto which has BEAUTIFUL sweeping views of the Tuscan Countryside.
Hotel Borgo Giusto is a former 17th century Tuscan Village that has been transformed into a luxury hotel with a spa and delicious restaurant. Check out more photos of the property, as well as my full-formal review in my article, Hotel Borgo Giusto: 17th Century Tuscan Village Turned Luxury Hotel.
I hope you’re not sick of the #PinkHour’s just yet because here’s another beaut from atop the vineyards in the mountains in Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, Italy.
Fall foliage on imported Japanese Maple trees that are in one of the gardens at Villa Melzi in Bellagio, on Lake Como.
Exploring Villa Melzi is just one of the many suggestions I make in my article How to Spend a Weekend in Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy.
A fruit and veggie stand in Verona, Italy, stocked with gourds and pumpkins (some even carved!) in preparation for Halloween.
How cute is this Halloween décor’d stairway in Riomaggiore?! I love that some of the carvings were made into gourds instead of just carvings of pumpkins!
Beautiful fall foliage adorning the facades of homes in Verona, Italy add a fun pop of color!
